Saara Harvie - Flin Flon
Why did you decide to run in the 2011 Manitoba election?
I decided to throw my hat into the ring for the 2011 election because I felt that the Flin Flon riding could do with a Green candidate. I am disturbed by the extremely low voter turn-out in our riding (36.24% for the 2007 provincial election), and want people to know that if they don't want to vote for the "Big 3" parties, I'm here as an alternative!
What experience will you bring to compliment your role as MLA?
I have been a volunteer over the years in many groups and organizations, so I have developed some of the skills necessary for political life, but mostly, I have a "bleeding heart", and want to make the world/ our province/ my riding a better place. I have a love for the North, and want to do whatever I can to make it the best place that it can possibly be.
Is there anything in particular you would like to change in our province? In your electoral division?
Infrastructure needs to be put at the forefront of the issues that are being dealt with province-wide, but especially in the north. Everything comes back to proper infrastructure or lack thereof, and until that's dealt with - until everyone in the Flin Flon electoral division has access to potable (clean, safe) drinking water, proper waste disposal, and roads - everything else takes a back seat. Everything is linked.
What is one thing you stand for that is not a part of your political party's platform?
All of my core beliefs mesh with party beliefs.
Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?
I’m excited to be the first Green Party candidate in the Flin Flon riding!
What is your favourite location in the electoral division you are currently a candidate for?
I love driving through the rocks and the lakes between Cranberry Portage and Flin Flon. The natural beauty of the area has appealed to me from the very first time I visited, 15 years ago.
